Tregantle Long Sands is a lesser-known beach in Cornwall, offering a unique and unspoilt experience for those who venture to this rural stretch of coastline.
Tregantle Long Sands is situated between Sharrow Point and Tregonhawke, with Freathy joining at low tide. The beach can be accessed via a narrow cliff path, which may not be suitable for everyone.
The beach is a long stretch of sand with rocky outcrops, backed by Ministry of Defence property, including an army base. Tregantle Fort overlooks the beach, and access is occasionally prohibited when the firing range is in use, indicated by red flags.
The beach is mainly used by locals and is popular with families looking for an unspoilt rural beach. However, visitors are warned to beware of high tide, when this part of the coast splits into many smaller coves. Additionally, access may be restricted due to military activities.
Nearby, Finnygook, a small south-facing shingle beach in Portwrinkle, offers a different beach experience. At low tide, a sandy beach is exposed with rocky outcrops perfect for rockpooling. The beach also features an old WWII Pill Box and a beach café, the Jolly Roger.
The area has a rich history, with fishing once being the main industry in Portwrinkle. The beach and surrounding areas were also involved in smuggling, with local legend saying that the ghost of notorious smuggler Silas Finn still haunts the beaches of Portwrinkle.
