Bigbury-on-Sea Causeway Beach is located at the mouth of the South Devon Avon, and is connected to Burgh Island by a causeway that is passable at low tide. At high tide, a sea tractor transports passengers to and from the island. The beach is approximately 450 metres wide and is situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) between the rivers Avon and Erme in Devon’s South Hams.
The beach has plenty of facilities, including good disabled access, a beach shop and cafe, and a seasonal lifeguard service. During the summer months, the shallow waters of Bigbury beach are generally fairly calm and safe to swim in. There is also a surf school for those looking to catch some waves, although nearby Bantham tends to draw more of a crowd.
Burgh Island, which is accessible across the causeway at low tide, is home to a stunning Art Deco hotel and has strong links with Agatha Christie. The famous crime author spent extended periods staying on the island and based two of her novels, ‘Evil Under the Sun’ and ‘And Then There Were None’, here.
Bigbury-on-Sea is a great family beach and has been a recipient of the Blue Flag award for its cleanliness and facilities. The beach is backed by low cliffs and surrounded by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), just south of the River Avon estuary.
Bigbury-on-Sea Causeway Beach is on the South Devon Heritage Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
