Bigbury-on-Sea South Beach is situated close to the mouth of the River Avon, approximately 450 metres wide, and is connected to Burgh Island by a causeway that is passable at low tide. At high tide, a sea tractor transports passengers to and from the island. The beach offers a good stretch of clean, golden sand, safe, shallow waters perfect for paddling, and interesting rock pools to explore.
The beach has a range of on-site facilities, including a beach shop, toilets, a first aid station, and a popular café. There is also a lifeguard presence from May to September. Visitors can enjoy a variety of watersports, such as kitesurfing, bodyboarding, and sea kayaking, with the Discovery Surf School offering lessons and equipment hire. The beach is also a great place for walking, with a scenic stretch of the South West Coastal Path nearby.
Bigbury-on-Sea Beach lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), with a pretty backdrop of rocky cliffs and rolling hills of the South Hams. The beach is surrounded by low cliffs and offers spectacular views of Burgh Island, which is home to an iconic Art-Deco hotel said to be the inspiration for Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None".
The beach has a pay-for car park, accessible from Marine Drive. Visitors can access the beach and Burgh Island via the causeway at low tide, or by sea tractor at high tide.
Bigbury-on-Sea South Beach is on the South Devon Heritage Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
