Black Rock Sands is an area of sand backed by dunes, situated at the northern edge of the mouth of Tremadog Bay. The beach is located near Snowdonia National Park and an estuary, providing a unique and scenic environment. Despite its name, the rocks in the area are not actually black.
The beach stretches for approximately 2 miles and is backed by a dune system, which has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Visitors can explore rockpools and caverns, and enjoy views of the surrounding mountains and countryside. A slipway provides vehicular access to the beach, making it popular with families, disabled visitors, and watersports enthusiasts. There are designated bathing and boat launching areas, as well as picnic areas.
Dogs are banned from the central section of the beach but are allowed on the eastern and western sections. Visitors can access shops, places to eat, and a golf club in the nearby village of Morfa Bychan, and additional facilities are available in the town of Porthmadog.
The Morfa Bychan, North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve, is located on the eastern side of the beach, while caves can be found at the western end. The beach is a popular destination for families and offers a range of activities, including sunbathing, picnicking, and paddling in the sea.
