The beach at Barton on Sea is characterised by a short shingle foreshore with cliff slumps and relatively stable paths. It is backed by 30 metre high steep unstable clay cliffs, with dense vegetation areas on the undercliffs and rock groynes along the beach. The beach looks out across Christchurch Bay, with views of the Isle of Wight to the east.
Christchurch Bay, where Barton on Sea Beach is situated, offers a shingle beach with rock groynes and a steep slope that flattens to shallow sandy flats when the tide retreats. The beach is backed by high, clay cliffs that are unstable in places, which has led to coastal erosion and the use of rock groynes as a coastal defence. The area is also known for its stunning cliff-top walks, with views out towards Hengistbury Head to the west and The Solent and Isle of Wight to the east.
Barton on Sea Beach and its surroundings offer a range of recreational activities, including golfing at the nearby Barton on Sea Golf course, paragliding, and walking. The area is also popular with visitors who enjoy dining at the cliff-top restaurant or relaxing at the beach-side café. The beach is a great place to walk dogs, with no restrictions from October to April, although restrictions apply during the summer months.
The beach has car parks along Marine Drive, both east and west, and holiday parks on the cliff top to the west of the beach. Visitors can walk along the beach to Highcliffe, which is located just a mile west of the Hampshire/Dorset county border.
