Calshot Beach is part of a shingle spit that extends into the southern end of Southampton Water. The beach is primarily composed of shingle with some sand and is backed by rows of colourful beach huts. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Solent, Southampton, and the Isle of Wight from the beach.
The beach features short wooden groynes at the top, which slope down to a shingle and sand shelf that extends out into the water at low tide. This shelf provides plenty of shallow water at mid-tides, making it a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts. The beach is home to the Calshot Activities Centre, which offers a range of activities including windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, and climbing. The centre is located in a historic hangar that was once used to house flying boats from the Calshot Naval Air Station.
The spit is also home to an extensive saltmarsh area, which is of important wildlife interest. The saltmarsh is home to a variety of birds and other wildlife, making it a great spot for nature lovers. In recent years, the beach has even played host to some rare visitors, including Thor the Walrus, who made an appearance in December 2022.
Calshot Beach has a rich history, with Calshot Castle, a 16th-century fort built by Henry VIII in 1539, located on the spit. The castle was one of several forts built to defend the south coast from French and Spanish attacks. Today, the beach offers a range of facilities, including the Calshot Sailing Club, which is located on the beach and offers a welcoming clubhouse for sailors.
The beach is dog-friendly, but visitors are advised to keep an eye out for signs indicating areas where dogs must be kept on a lead. While Calshot Beach has been cited as a nudist/naturist beach in the past, the current owners of the beach (Manor of Cadland) do not permit nudity and have threatened to take legal action against anyone who does not comply.
