Crimdon South Beach is a pleasant sandy beach situated in front of Hartlepool Golf Course, with a caravan and holiday park located a little to the north. The beach is surrounded by nature reserves, including the Durham Coast National Nature Reserve.
The beach had its heyday in the 1950s, when it was a popular spot for day-trippers from the working towns inland. However, it has since fallen into disrepair, with much of the former infrastructure in a state of disuse. Despite this, there are plans for a re-generation scheme to revitalise the area.
The beach offers a long, sandy stretch, perfect for a stroll north of Hartlepool. The backdrop to the beach is largely comprised of the greens of Hartlepool Golf Club, with industrial relics and dunes forming part of the Durham Coast National Nature Reserve. A notable landmark at the southern end of the beach is Steetley Pier, a 2,000-foot-long wooden structure dating back to the 1960s. Although the pier itself was not demolished, a substantial section was removed to prevent access.
Hartlepool Beach, also known as Headland Beach, is located in a fascinating harbour town and headland on the Durham beaches coast. The sandy beach stretches from the tip of the headland to Steetley Pier.
