Seaton Carew is a small resort located on Tees Bay, to the south of Hartlepool. The North Beach, also known as Carr House Sands, is one of three designated beaches in the area and lies between Seaton Carew's main beach and Hartlepool Marina. The beach boasts a large expanse of sand with a gentle slope down to the sea, making it an ideal spot for a variety of beach and water activities.
The beach features dunes and rock pools, as well as a promenade with restaurants and small-scale resort development. At low tide, a wide expanse of golden sand is revealed, and the sandy seabed makes it a popular spot for beach and water sports enthusiasts, walkers, and fishermen. The 400-metre stretch of the beach around Newburn Bridge is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, known as the Hartlepool Submerged Forest.
The Hartlepool Submerged Forest is a unique area that was once a landmass dating back to the period when Britain was joined to the European landmass. The peat beds lying below the sea here were once covered in trees and peat bog, and at low tide, the peat beds are sometimes revealed, with tree stumps dating back thousands of years having been found. Archaeologists have also discovered animal bones, flint tools, and other evidence of human activity stretching back into pre-historic times.
The beach is situated near Greatham Creek, which is home to a colony of seals and is part of the Teesmouth National Nature Reserve. Visitors to the area may also spot seals basking just offshore. The nearby Seaton Carew Golf Club offers golfing facilities, and the Marine Hotel and Norton Hotel provide seafront accommodation.
