North Gare Sands is part of the Teesmouth National Nature Reserve (NNR) and lies within Tees Bay. The beach is a large expanse of sand with a gentle slope down to the sea, accompanied by dunes and rock pools. The area is also home to a promenade with some small-scale resort development. The northern section of the beach is designated as part of the Teesmouth NNR, and the beach and dunes are also Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protection Area (SPA).
The beach is situated near the mouth of the River Tees and runs along the side of the Seaton Channel as it joins the river and flows into the North Sea. To access the beach by car, visitors can park in the car park at the end of North Gare Road, from where a footpath leads across the Seaton Carew Golf Links, through an area of dunes, to North Gare Pier. The pier stretches approximately 250 yards into the sea.
The dunes around North Gare Sands are popular with birdwatchers, who can spot a wide variety of wading birds and interesting migrant species. In springtime and summer, the dunes and marshland behind the beach are home to a wide range of wildflowers, including four different species of marsh orchid, which flower in June and July. Additionally, Greatham Creek, located on the other side of Seaton Channel within the Teeside Natural Nature Reserve, is home to a colony of seals.
Visitors to North Gare Sands can walk along the sand dunes and enjoy the natural surroundings of the beach. There are also trails through the dunes, and the option to walk along the coast to Seaton Carew. Behind the beach lies Seaton Common Nature Reserve, which attracts walkers, birdwatchers, and nature lovers to enjoy the wildlife and scenery.
