Ilfracombe Wildersmouth Beach is a sand and shingle beach resort, approximately 160 metres wide, situated in a sheltered cove surrounded by rocks. The beach is close to the town centre of Ilfracombe and is where the East and West Wilder Brooks meet and flow across the beach to the sea from a tunnel on the west side.
The beach lies in a sheltered cove with rocks and a rocky cliff on the western side, offering views over Ilfracombe when looking east. At high tide, the beach is almost completely submerged by water. The cove is backed by a stone sea-wall, and a promenade runs behind the cove, with the South-West Coast Path crossing the beach. The East Wilder and West Wilder streams pass into the sea via a tunnel at Wildersmouth beach.
In the past, the sheltered bay was a popular haunt for smugglers. Despite its proximity to the town, this beach gets less busy than many of the longer, sandier beaches in the area. It is particularly dog-friendly, and dogs can be seen nosing around the rocks and splashing in the water. There are also a fair number of dog-friendly cafes and pubs in nearby Ilfracombe.
The beach is suitable for swimming and sunbathing, especially during low tide when more beach area is exposed. The rocky areas around the beach provide opportunities for exploring rock pools, making it a fun spot for families and children. At high tide, the beach can be almost entirely submerged, which may limit beach activities during those times. It’s advisable to check tide times before planning your visit. Ilfracombe Tourist Information Office is just a short walk away, and the local museum behind that offers visitors some insight into the locality.
Ilfracombe Wildersmouth Beach is adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
