Newcastle Beach is situated at the western end of a long sandy beach stretching to Murlough and the entrance to Dundrum Bay. The beach is approximately a mile and a half long and features a mix of sand and pebbles. The scenic views of the nearby Mourne Mountains make this a popular destination for walkers and those looking to enjoy the outdoors.
The beach is popular for swimming, sunbathing, and other seaside recreation activities. A promenade runs along the section of the beach next to the town, offering free Wi-Fi and providing access to a range of shops, pubs, and restaurants. Visitors can also access the beach via stairs or a slipway. For those who prefer not to swim in the sea, Newcastle offers two outdoor swimming pools: Tropicana, with warm water and children's slides, and Rock Pool, an original unheated 1930s lido.
Murlough Beach and Murlough National Nature Reserve can be reached by walking in a northerly direction along the dunes from Newcastle Beach. The town itself has a busy high street set back from the beach, featuring shops, cafes, and amusement arcades.
