Murlough Beach stretches from Newcastle to Tyrella, situated in front of the Murlough National Nature Reserve. The beach is nestled under the beautiful Mourne Mountains and is known for its strong winds, making it a popular spot for surfing, kite surfing, and windsurfing. However, the main attraction of the area is walking, either along the beautiful sandy beach or amongst the sand dunes.
Behind the beach, Murlough Nature Reserve, a 6000-year-old system of dunes, is renowned for its diverse wildlife, including badgers, stoats, 23 species of butterfly, and a large variety of birdlife. The reserve became Ireland's first nature reserve after the National Trust took ownership in 1967. Visitors can also spot seals along the coast and occasionally see porpoises in the waters. Dogs must be kept on a lead in the nature reserve.
The closest parking is the Murlough National Nature Reserve Car Park, located next to Lazy BJ Ranch and Mourneview Caravan Parks, with toilets also available. To access the beach, visitors must walk a few hundred meters through the nature reserve. The nearest town to the beach is Newcastle, about two miles to the southwest of the nature reserve, which can be reached directly along the beach, past the Royal County Down Golf Club.
Tyrella Beach, located in Dundrum Bay, Downpatrick, County Down, is another popular sandy beach with family-friendly facilities, including lifeguards on duty during the summer months. The beach is backed by a dune conservation area brimming with wildlife, making it a wonderful place for a walk. Visitors can also take a horse ride along the beach from Seahorse Polo and Beach Rides nearby.
During the summer months, there is a lifeguard service at Murlough Beach, ensuring safe bathing for visitors.
