The beaches at Ryde, on the north-east coast of the Isle of Wight, offer a vast stretch of sand at low tide. The beach on the western side of the pier, known as Ryde West Beach, is quieter than that on the eastern side and is used mainly by locals who come here to relax or fish whilst admiring the fine views across the Solent.
Before visiting, beach-goers should check tide times, as there is very little beach here at high tide. Those venturing out onto the vast expanse of wet sand which is exposed at low tide need to be wary of rapidly incoming tides which can leave walkers stranded on the sandbanks.
The adjacent Ryde Pier, which is over 200 years old, is reputed to be the oldest seaside pleasure pier in the world. It has a road and railway line running along its length. The town of Ryde, just south of the beach, offers a good selection of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants.
Ryde East Beach, located near the centre of Ryde, is a large sandy beach that is great for a day out with the family. The beach features a children's playground on the beachfront, and swimming is safe with lifeguards on duty. Visitors can walk along the beach to the harbour and along to Ryde Pier, which has a train station at the end with links to the mainland and Shanklin.
Visitors can get to Ryde Beach by train, with links to the mainland and Shanklin, or by sea, with a ten-minute journey by hovercraft from Clarence Pier in Southsea.
Ryde Beach is dog friendly, with restrictions during the summer months.
Ryde West Beach is adjacent to the Isle of Wight Coast Path.
