The beach is situated in the historic old town of Portsmouth, close to the 15th century Round Tower, which now houses an art gallery. The beach stretches from the Round Tower to Victoria Pier and is backed by the historic Portsmouth City wall. The pebble beach offers stunning views of Portsmouth Harbour and is close to various attractions, including historic pubs and the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, home to notable ships like HMS Victory.
While swimming is not recommended due to strong currents in and out of Portsmouth Harbour, the beach is ideal for fishing and leisurely walks along the scenic coastline. There are lifeguarded beaches at Southsea, located just along the coast, which provide safer swimming conditions. The beach is a popular spot for fishing, and Victoria Pier is also a well-known fishing spot.
The beach is close to shops, cafes, and the Hotwalls studios artisan market on Broad street. The Portsmouth Millennium Promenade Walk, a scenic route of just under 2 miles, passes by this beach and links Portsmouth's historic waterfront. The walk starts from Spur Redoubt near Clarence Pier in Southsea and finishes at The Hard.
The beach can sometimes be affected by heavy wash from passing ships, which may impact the beach conditions.
