Strathy Bay is a beautiful, wide, sandy beach situated in the heart of Mackay country, sheltered by a rocky headland. The bay is naturally formed with sand dunes and boasts outstanding views of the Pentland Firth. The River Strathy runs into the bay at the western end of the beach, which is enclosed by cliffs to the east.
The bay is surrounded by magnificent, hilly scenery and features a number of caves and sea stacks. The beach is a popular spot for surfing due to its sheltered location, which protects it from the biggest winter swells and strong winds. The nearby hilltops offer excellent walking opportunities, particularly in May and June when wildflowers are in bloom.
There is a small, free car park located near Strathy East, which includes a log cabin information centre and toilets. The beach can be accessed by walking along a path past a cemetery and over a small hilltop. While facilities are limited in the area, the nearby Strathy Inn offers food, including a children's menu, and accommodation.
Visitors should be aware that there is a dog ban on the beach during the summer months.
