Thurso Bay is a mostly sandy beach, stretching for about 500 metres alongside the small Highland town of Thurso. The beach has some rockier sections, particularly at its eastern end, where the River Thurso flows into the bay. This eastern area is known for its rocky reefs that produce some of the UK's most celebrated waves for surfing.
Thurso is one of the most northerly points in mainland Britain, just a stone's throw from John o'Groats. The beach is easily accessible, with parking available along Pentland Crescent, including disabled parking, and a short flight of steps leading down to the beach. There is also roadside parking along Marine Terrace, and further parking available in the centre of Thurso.
The town of Thurso offers a range of amenities, including shops, toilets, pubs, restaurants, and a railway station. Visitors can also explore the local museum, which depicts the history of the town and features a collection of taxidermy birds found in the area.
Scrabster Harbour is located about a mile to the north west of the beach, offering ferry travel to the Orkney Islands.
