The beach at Melvich Bay features golden sands, dunes, and a rocky outcrop to the west, with the estuary of the River Halladale situated to the east. The crescent-shaped beach is backed by sand dunes that are covered with wild flowers in the spring, creating a beautiful and vibrant landscape.
Melvich Bay is situated near the hamlet of Portskerra and can be accessed via a short and narrow track signposted off the A896. From here, it is a short walk through the dunes to reach the beach. The secluded bay is overlooked by Bighouse Lodge, a historic building constructed in 1765 as a home for the Chief of Clan Mackay.
The beach at Melvich Bay is a popular spot for surfers, with many considering it one of the area's best surf spots. At low tide, the vast expanse of golden sand provides ample space for visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The beach is also dog-friendly, making it an ideal destination for pet owners.
