The Annan Beach area comprises a large salt marsh at the mouth of the channel of the Rivers Esk and Eden, which serves as a haven for wildlife, particularly bird life. East of Annan, a shingle beach runs west to Powfoot, providing visitors with an opportunity to enjoy views over the marsh and its wildlife.
The rural beach is backed mostly by fields, and parking is available along the end of the country road leading on from Waterfoot Road in Annan. Additionally, parking with direct access to the shingle beach can be found to the west of the River Annan, south of the Hamlet of Newbie. The town of Annan has a railway station with direct services to Carlisle and Glasgow, as well as many shops, restaurants, places to stay, and a museum. The 53-mile-long Annandale Way walking route passes through the town.
Bowness-on-Solway, part of the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB) in Cumbria, is a wonderful destination for long walks and exploring the coast. The beach is surrounded by sand dunes and salt marshes, providing a habitat for various bird species.
The beach is a haven for birdwatchers, with opportunities to see oystercatchers, lapwings, redshanks, and many other wading birds. Nature lovers can enjoy the variety of birds along sand dunes, salt marsh, and shingle beds along the shoreline. Visitors can walk along the beach, head to the RSPB Campfield Marsh Nature Reserve, or cycle along route 72, which takes you along this part of the coast.
Bowness-on-Solway marks the western end of Hadrian's Wall, and the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail starts (or ends) here. There is parking close to the beach, and Bowness-on-Solway Beach is dog-friendly all year round.
