Charmouth East Beach is a beautiful area of the Dorset coast with spectacular seascapes. It is part of what is now dubbed the Jurassic Coast due to the numerous fossil remains discovered in the area. The beach attracts fossil hunters, families, and day trippers alike. It is separated from Charmouth West Beach by the River Char.
Charmouth East Beach is a popular choice for families due to its size and sandy areas. The beach is also renowned for its fossil finds, including small Ammonites and Belemnites, which can be discovered in the pyrite along the shoreline, particularly during the winter months when rough seas reveal more fossils. The pebbles on this beach are generally smaller, and the beach becomes increasingly sandy below the tide mark. When the tide is out, a good-sized expanse of flat sand stretches the length of the beach, providing a great surface for hiking along the coast.
Charmouth is located approximately 2 miles east of Lyme Regis and 6 miles west of Bridport. Access to the beach is either over a footbridge or by wading through the river at low tide. However, caution is advised as the river can be deeper and faster flowing than it appears.
Visitors are advised to exercise caution when swimming, as landslides can occur frequently. It is recommended to avoid sitting directly under the cliffs or searching for fossils near recent falls. Additionally, visitors should be aware of the tide times to avoid getting cut off by the tide when walking along the beach.
Charmouth East Beach is a dog-friendly destination all year round. The beach offers fantastic views of Golden Cap and is an ideal location for a day out with the family, fossil hunting, or scenic walks along the coast. For hikers, Stonebarrow Hill offers a scenic, circular walk.
Charmouth East Beach is on the West Dorset Heritage Coast and the Jurassic Coast.
