The town of Lyme Regis is renowned for its Jurassic cliffs, which contain a vast array of fossils that can be found along the foreshore. The town is also famous for being the setting for the novel and film 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'.
Church Cliff Beach is situated at the eastern end of Lyme Regis and is approximately 100 metres wide. The beach is backed by rock armour that protects the promenade and features the River Lim flowing across it. The beach is sandy in places and covered at high tide, but at low tide, an extensive rock ledge full of rock pools is exposed.
Church Cove Beach is a small, sandy beach located to the east of Lyme Regis, near the town centre. The beach can be entirely submerged at high tide, but at low tide, a patch of sand and several rock pools are uncovered, making it a great spot for finding shore life. Although the water is not particularly clean, the beach offers wonderful views of The Cobb, the surrounding coast, and a coastal path leading to Charmouth.
There are plenty of facilities in Lyme Regis, including a first aid post, toilets, shops, restaurants, pubs, and museums. The tourist information centre is located close to the beach, and there are several car parks nearby, including Cobb Gate car park and Pitthouse car park. Access to the beach is via a slipway.
Lyme Regis Town Beach is a popular beach in the heart of the Jurassic Coast, perfect for families with activities for both young and old. The promenade backs the beach and stretches the length of the town, with a sandy area near 'The Cobb' perfect for families. The beach is also famous for being the location where Mary Anning made the discovery of the Ichthyosaur in 1819.
There are dog restrictions in place on some of the beaches in Lyme Regis. Between 1st April and 31st October, dogs are not allowed between Cobb Gate Car Park and the Lifeboat slipway. However, dogs are allowed during the winter months.
Lyme Regis Church Cliff Beach is on the Jurassic Coast, and adjacent to the South West Coast Path.
