Millport Bay is a small seaside resort with an attractive seafront, featuring a sheltered sandy bay, a harbour, an old pier, and a promenade. The bay is a popular destination for families, surfers, and canoeists, with a sandy beach that offers great views over the rocks in Millport Bay and south towards Little Cumbrae.
The island of Great Cumbrae can be accessed by ferry from Largs, which takes just under 10 minutes. From the island's ferry terminal, there is a bus link to the charming seaside resort of Millport, the only settlement on the island.
Millport has a small harbour, a pier built in 1833, and the splendid Cathedral of the Isles, Great Britain's smallest cathedral, a Victorian Gothic delight. The town is a good destination for those seeking a resort with a genuine old-world feel to it. The island is also a popular destination for cyclists, who come here to do the 10-mile island circuit. Bikes can be taken on the ferry or hired in the town.
The sandy beach in Millport Bay is popular with families as well as surfers and canoeists. Visitors can admire the painted crocodile on a rock, which provides a great photo opportunity. The beach is also great for hunting for crabs or simply sitting and admiring the views. There are good wildlife spotting opportunities on the island, with a multitude of sea birds, a colony of seals, and the occasional sighting of a basking shark out at sea.
After enjoying the beach, visitors can stop off for an ice-cream or chips from one of the choice of cafes and shops to be found in the town.
