Ballyholme Beach is a mile-long sandy bay situated within the town of Bangor, an eastern suburb of which it forms a part. The beach is a crescent-shaped bay with a number of interesting rock pools at either end. The strand stretches for slightly over one kilometer and is interspersed by a number of wooden groynes. For most of its length, Ballyholme beach is backed by a sea wall, with a walking promenade above it.
The beach and promenade offer excellent views of the surrounding hilly coastline and the town of Bangor. This is especially the case at night when the lights of the city reflect beautifully on the water. Sailing is a popular pastime here, with the Ballyholme Yacht Club located at the western end of the beach. A car park can be found at the end of Bank Lane at the eastern end of the beach, as well as public toilets and a small children’s play area. The beach can be accessed down a short ramp.
Visitors to Ballyholme Beach can enjoy a range of activities, including swimming, paddle boarding, and kayaking. The centre of Bangor is about 1 kilometre west of the beach and offers many facilities to visitors, including a train station with frequent services to Belfast. Safety information about bathing is signposted on the beach between June and September.
Located at the end of Ballyholme beach is the National Trust Nature Reserve of Ballymacormick Point, with a walk that leads to the beautiful seaside village of Groomsport. The beach is a short distance from the town centre of Bangor, making it an ideal destination for those looking to combine a day at the beach with the amenities of a larger town.
