Millom is a small town situated on the edge of the beautiful Lake District, overlooking Duddon Sands, an area of sandy, grassy saltmarshes. The beach here is a mix of shingle and sand backed by grassy dunes. It is not as popular as nearby Haverigg beach.
In 1855, iron ore was discovered in Millom, and for the next 100 years, the town became a relatively large industrial town. The mines have long since closed, and today the area once operating as an iron ore mine and steelworks forms the Hodbarrow RSPB nature reserve. A lagoon now fills the former pit.
To the south-west of Duddon Sands is one of the country’s largest wind farms. The Hodbarrow RSPB nature reserve, located on the edge of Hodbarrow Lagoon, is a haven for wildlife and wading birds.
The nearby village of Haverigg is a small seaside resort with an award-winning beach featuring a long stretch of sand, making it ideal for various recreational activities. The coastal path is located on the east of the beach, by the large sculpture – ‘Escape to the light’. The beach is backed by sand dunes, providing a beautiful natural setting and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Millom has a lake and a nature reserve nearby, as well as places to eat out in the town.
Millom Beach is adjacent to the Cumbria Coastal Way.
