Ravenglass Beach is located on the coastal estuary where the Mite, Irt, and Esk rivers converge before draining into the Irish Sea. The beach is composed of a mixture of sand, mud, and shingle, backed by a small grassy area at one end, with former fishermen's cottages running alongside the length of the beach.
The village of Ravenglass is home to the remains of "Glannoventa", an important old Roman Fort. The fort's bathhouse, with its 12ft high walls, is still standing today, showcasing the region's rich history.
Visitors to Ravenglass Beach can explore nearby attractions, including Muncaster Castle, which has been home to the Pennington family since 1208. The castle and gardens offer spectacular views, and an audio-tour commentary narrated by members of the Pennington family. The Hawk and Owl Centre, located near the castle, puts on interesting displays. Additionally, the La'al Rattie Steam Railway, one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in the country, runs from Ravenglass to Eskdale, offering a scenic and tranquil journey through the countryside.
The area around Ravenglass Beach is known for its wealth of birdlife, making it a great spot for nature enthusiasts. The beach and surrounding countryside also offer ample opportunities for leisurely walks, outdoor activities, and exploration.
While not directly adjacent to Ravenglass Beach, Saltcoats Beach in Cumbria is another charming destination known for its long stretch of sand and pebbles. This beach is suitable for families, with ample space for children to play and for dogs to roam. A nearby campsite on the Ravenglass estuary offers accommodation options for visitors.
