Alnmouth Beach, situated on the Northumberland coast, is a serene and picturesque destination that offers a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Alnmouth Beach is a quiet sandy beach set in a wide bay, providing a beautiful rural setting with plenty of opportunities for bird watching along the sand dunes. The beach is located at the mouth of the River Aln, with the river's estuary opening onto the south of the beach.
The village of Alnmouth, situated on the north bank of the River Aln, is a charming collection of elegant red-roofed houses that nearly spills down to the sand. Although the village was once home to an important harbour, the great storm of Christmas Eve, 1806, changed the course of the river, leaving the harbour stranded. Today, the village focuses on the beach, offering a range of activities for visitors.
Visitors to Alnmouth Beach can enjoy a variety of activities, including building sandcastles, horseback riding, and long walks along the shoreline. However, swimming is not generally recommended, particularly towards the estuary mouth on a dropping tide, due to safety concerns. Warning signs are in place to advise against paddling near the river mouth.
The beach, particularly the area to the south of the estuary, offers a wealth of bird and wildlife watching opportunities, with vast expanses of dunes providing a natural habitat for various species. As part of the Northumberland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the scenery at Alnmouth Beach is stunning, with rolling sand dunes and unspoilt views.
Visitors can also enjoy a round of golf at the Alnmouth Village Golf Club, which opened in 1869 and offers breathtaking views, particularly at the 7th tee. The golf club is situated near the beach and provides a unique recreational experience.
Alnmouth Beach is on the North Northumberland Heritage Coast, and adjacent to the Northumberland Coast Path.
