Newbiggin South Beach is a gently sloping resort beach situated at the southern end of Newbiggin Bay. The beach stretches approximately 750 metres in length and is backed by a promenade that runs along the entire length of the bay. The beach has a sandy shoreline, but it has been subject to serious erosion in the past. To mitigate this, a new sea defence system has been constructed, along with a promenade behind the beach, to protect it from further erosion. Rocky outcrops can be found at either end of the beach, providing a habitat for marine wildlife and making it an ideal spot for rockpooling.
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, a town with a rich history of mining and fishing, is located on the Northumberland coast, to the east of Ashington. The town still boasts a fleet of small, traditional fishing boats. In 2007, the beach underwent significant sea defence works, which involved transporting 500,000 tonnes of sand from Skegness to the site. Today, the bay features a number of rocky breakwaters and a substantial sea wall.
The bay is a haven for those interested in marine wildlife, with numerous rockpools exposed at low tide. Visitors can explore the rocky promontory of Spital Point, located at the bottom end of the bay, and discover a natural stone arch nearby. A car park is conveniently located just off Seaton Road. The Newbiggin Maritime Centre, a museum showcasing local history, is also nearby, along with a cafe offering stunning views of the beach.
Newbiggin Bay is a wide, sweeping sandy beach, ideal for families on a summer's day. The beach is home to 'The Couples Statue', which looks out to sea. Visitors can take a leisurely walk along the sea front and enjoy the scenic views.
