Fisherrow West Beach is situated in a large sandy bay in Musselburgh, a few miles east of Edinburgh. The beach is located to the west of a tidal harbour, which is the mouth of the River Esk. The harbour provides mooring for around 50 leisure boats and offers one of the least expensive tidal berthing options on the Firth of Forth.
The beach has views over the Firth of Forth, which is rich in bird life, and is backed by buildings and gardens. The Brustone Burn enters the sea at the western end of the beach. The nearby harbour provides parking with a children's play area, places to eat, and immediate access to the beach. Toilets, which are open all year round, can be found at the Back Sands.
There are good walking, cycling, and bus links to the beach, although the railway station is approximately one mile away. The 134-mile long John Muir Way long distance path passes adjacent to the beach, providing a scenic route for walkers.
The adjacent golf course, now within the Musselburgh Racecourse, dates back to circa 1672, making it one of the oldest golf courses in the world. Musselburgh, which was once just a small fishing village, has a rich history and now boasts a historic racecourse, a tidal harbour, two beaches, and numerous amenities.
