Barafundle Beach is a 70-metre-long, east-facing sandy beach backed by limestone cliffs, dunes, and trees. The bay is owned by The National Trust and forms part of the Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation, reflecting its high conservation status. The beach is situated within Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and boasts crystal-clear waters and a picturesque backdrop of pine-covered limestone headlands.
The beach was once the private domain of the Cawdor family of Stackpole Court, who built a castellated wall and steps down to the beach at the northern end. The Stackpole Estate, managed by the National Trust, continues to care for the beach, ensuring it retains its unspoilt charm.
The beach offers a range of activities, including swimming, kayaking, and picnicking. The calm and clear waters make it suitable for swimming and snorkeling, although visitors should exercise caution and be mindful of sea conditions, as there are no lifeguards on duty. Dogs are welcome year-round at Barafundle Bay, making it an ideal spot for pet owners.
The beach is accessible via a half-mile walk from the nearest car park at Stackpole Quay. The lack of direct road access and facilities on the beach contributes to its secluded and peaceful atmosphere. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes for the trek from the car park to the beach.
Barafundle Beach has received numerous accolades, including Blue Flag awards and features in Country Life. Its natural beauty and conservation status have also earned it a place on various 'best beaches' lists.
Barafundle Beach is adjacent to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and the Wales Coast Path.
