Sandy Haven Beach is a rocky beach that exposes sand at low tide, situated on the shores of Milford Haven waterway. The beach spans approximately 800 metres, facing south across the waterway and lies in front of low sandstone cliffs to the south west of Herbrandston.
The beach is nestled in a large creek that flows from the Milford Haven Waterway between Dale and Milford Haven. At low tide, a small stream trickles from the creek, allowing visitors to cross to the eastern shore. The beach is mostly rocky, but a strip of sand becomes accessible as the tide recedes.
Sandy Haven Pill, a freshwater influence, drains land to the north and flows into the Sandy Haven Estuary. The bathing water lies within the Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation and the surrounding coast forms part of the Milford Haven Waterway Site of Special Scientific Interest. Additionally, the beach is located within Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, highlighting the area's significant environmental value.
The beach can be accessed via the Milford Haven to Dale Road or the road leading from Herbrandston Hall. A small caravan site is located on the cliffs above the beach, offering a convenient base for visitors. The beach is surrounded by low, wooded cliffs, including Great Castle Head and South Hook Point, creating a sheltered and scenic spot.
Sandy Haven Beach has inspired many artists, including the famous Graham Sutherland, who frequently featured the beach in his paintings. The beach's mystique and traditional elements, such as the cottages along the waterway, are thought to have contributed to its artistic appeal.
Sandy Haven Beach is an ideal destination for those seeking a quiet and peaceful retreat. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll, walk their dog, and take in the scenic views of the surrounding coastline.
Sandy Haven Beach is adjacent to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and the Wales Coast Path.
