Freshwater East Beach is a sandy beach measuring approximately 1 kilometre in length, backed by a large dune system and Old Red Sandstone cliffs on either side. The beach forms part of the Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation and lies within Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Historically, the secluded beach was a haunt for smugglers, but it is now particularly popular with water sports enthusiasts and local fishermen.
The sweeping sandy bay of Freshwater East is sheltered by the headland of Trewent Point, making it a great family beach with generally safe swimming conditions, although there is no lifeguard service. The beach is also dog friendly, and at the southern end, a small stream is always popular with children. Local amenities include a nearby car park, shop, cafe, and disabled toilets, as well as the village of Freshwater East, which is just a short walk away.
Freshwater East Beach offers a range of activities, including surfing, kitesurfing, and swimming, as well as diving and fishing. The beach's secluded nature in the past made it a favourite with smugglers, but it is now a popular spot for various seaside pastimes.
In contrast, Swanlake Beach is a rugged and secluded gem located along the South Pembrokeshire coast. This shingle beach can only be accessed on foot and reveals stretches of golden sand and intriguing rock pools during low tide. While it lacks facilities, the beach offers breathtaking views and is popular among anglers and nature enthusiasts. However, visitors should exercise caution when swimming or engaging in water activities, as there are no lifeguard services.
