Watchet is a harbour town with a rocky foreshore that is exposed for up to half a mile at low tide. The cliffs in this area are renowned for their abundance of fossils, including ammonites, particularly on the stretch between Watchet and Blue Anchor. The Market House Museum displays local fossil finds, making it a great place to learn about the area's geological history. Beachcombing is a popular activity on the beach, as many interesting fossils get washed up by the tides. However, visitors need to be aware that the area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and hammering at the bedrock is strictly forbidden.
Visitors to the beach need to be wary of the tides, which come in exceptionally quickly. It is best to check tide times when planning a visit. Car parks can be found in the town centre of Watchet, along Harbour Road, where there are also public toilets. Shops, places to eat, and places to stay can all be found nearby. The town centre also contains several interesting museums, including the Watchet Boat Museum, a marina, and a train station along the heritage, mostly steam-operated West Somerset Railway.
St Audries Bay is a picturesque beach near Watchet in Somerset, with stunning sea-views, a wide open sand and pebble beach. The beach itself is a mix of sand, pebbles, shingle, and rocks. The wide bay is bordered by unstable cliffs primarily composed of mudstones, siltstones, and marls. One of the notable features of St Audries Bay is its waterfalls, with two waterfalls cascading down the cliffs, one of which plunges directly onto the pebbled beach below. Visitors can access St Audries Bay via a path leading from the Home Farm Holiday Centre, which offers parking and basic amenities such as toilets and a small shop. The walk to the beach involves a 150-yard trek down a wide track followed by a short flight of steps. Dogs are permitted on the beach at all times, making it a dog-friendly destination.
