Barry Island, despite its name, is not actually an island. It was once an island but was joined to the mainland in the late 19th century with the construction of the docks. Today, Barry is South Wales's largest town, offering a range of traditional seaside amusements, places to eat and drink, a pleasure park, and a vibrant High Street with independent shops.
The Barry Island area is home to several beaches, each with its own unique character.
Watch House Bay, also known as Watch Tower Bay, is one of the quieter beaches in the area. At high tide, the pebble beach is flanked by rocks on one side and low-rise cliffs with dense trees on the other. As the tide recedes, a vast expanse of sand is exposed. A slipway and small jetty lead down to the water, and the old watch house, built in the 1860s as a lookout over the old harbour, remains as a reminder of the area's nautical past. Behind the beach is a park area with a marine lake in the shape of a Welsh harp. The closest facilities are at Knapp Beach, a short walk away.
Whitmore Bay, also known as Barry Island Beach, is a beautiful sandy beach featuring golden sands perfect for sunbathing and building sandcastles. Visitors can swim in the sea, explore rock pools, or relax on the beach. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months. The beach was featured in the popular TV show Gavin and Stacey and is a must-visit for fans. The beach is backed by the Barry Island Pleasure Park, offering seaside arcades with rides and games for families. The beach and promenade are accessible, with beach wheelchairs available for those who need them. Parking is also easily accessible close to the beach. However, dogs are not allowed on the beach from May 1 to September 30.
While Barry Island is a busy built-up seaside resort town with a large fairground, Watch House Bay is slightly removed and generally quieter. Both beaches offer a unique experience, with Watch House Bay providing a more peaceful atmosphere and Whitmore Bay offering a range of activities and amenities.
Little Island Bay is adjacent to the Wales Coast Path.
