East Head Beach is a sand dune spit situated at the western end of West Wittering, on the entrance to Chichester Harbour. It is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance. The spit covers approximately 10 hectares and is linked to the mainland by a narrow spit known as "The Hinge".
The beach is backed by dunes and salt marshes, providing a habitat for many rare species of plant and animal life. Skylarks nest in the marram grass that grows amongst the dunes, and ringed plovers nest in the shingle at the north end of the beach. At low tide, there is a chance of spotting seals lazing around on the mudflats. The area is also home to diverse wildlife, including migratory birds that visit during the winter months, making it a popular spot for birdwatching.
The area has been designated a Special Site of Scientific Interest and a Ramsar Site due to its fragile and constantly shifting sands. The beach is owned and managed by the National Trust. To access the beach, visitors can go to West Wittering Beach car park and take the footpath leading out from the western end of the parking area. Parking is available, but can be expensive, and there are good facilities provided, including toilets and a café.
The beach allows dogs, but there are restrictions in place during the peak season (from May to September). Visitors are advised to respect the natural environment and wildlife, and to stay on designated paths to avoid damaging the fragile dunes and salt marshes.
East Head Beach offers excellent views out over Bracklesham Bay and across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Visitors can stroll along the sands, watch yachts and other sea vessels sailing by, and enjoy an afternoon walking along the sand dunes. The beach is ideal for nature lovers and those looking for long walks.
