The beach is situated near the unique Selsey Bill low headland, which stretches 3 miles out to sea. The beach extends in both directions from the headland, with the groyne-ribbed beach to the east being the most popular. This section of the beach is backed by a sea wall, with shingle stretching towards Pagham.
The beach forms the western side of the long stretch of shingle around the Manhood Peninsula, a headland at the most southerly point of Sussex. The peninsula is only slightly above sea level, and the area is at risk from significant coastal erosion. The beach itself is mainly shingle, with some patches of sand at low tide. There are a range of sea defences in place, including a large number of groynes along the beach. However, there are no lifeguards on this beach.
The village of Selsey has shops and other limited facilities. It has a long tradition of fishing and still has its own fleet of fishing boats. Visitors can enjoy local seafood and some of the best fish and chips on the south coast at one of the village's eateries.
Selsey East Beach is a popular destination enjoyed by families, with children’s facilities including a playground and family cafe behind the seawall. A promenade runs from East Beach to Selsey centre, which is great for an afternoon stroll. This beach is dog friendly, with restrictions between Groynes E26 & E33.
