Eastney Beach is a straight 1km long shingle beach backed by the main seafront road. It is situated at the eastern undeveloped end of Southsea seafront, joining up with Southsea East. The beach is located in the southeast corner of Portsea Island, which is part of the city of Portsmouth. The entire length of beach faces south across the Solent with views of the Isle of Wight to the west.
The beach is predominantly shingle, interspersed with significant amounts of vegetation, with sand exposed at low water. It is a popular spot for swimming and many water sports, including windsurfing, with designated zoning for enthusiasts. The beach is also an important plant habitat, with over 100 different species adapted to growing in sand and shingle and tolerating large amounts of saltwater.
Parking, including disabled spaces, can be found along Eastney Esplanade, which runs for most of the length of the beach and offers visitors direct access to the shore. Public toilets can be found at the eastern end of the esplanade, and a café is also available, overlooking the beach. The old Royal Marines museum on the esplanade has recently been converted into a luxury hotel.
The area towards the eastern end of the beach is a popular spot for nudists, known as Eastney Naturist Beach. Although not officially recognised as a naturist beach, it has a long-standing tradition for those who prefer to enjoy the sun without clothes. Visitors should be aware that the naturist section of the beach is located in front of the disused military buildings of the Fraser Range.
