Largo East Beach is a sheltered and picturesque sandy beach situated between Lower Largo and Dumbarnie Links Nature Reserve. The beach provides views south over the Firth of Forth and is located just to the east of the ancient fishing village of Lower Largo.
The beach is notable for being the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk in 1676, whose experiences as a castaway on a desert island inspired Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe. A signpost in the village directs visitors to the Juan Fernandez Islands in the South Pacific, where Selkirk spent over 4 years.
The nearest parking is available in Lower Largo, along Main Street, adjacent to the beach. Toilets are located at the car park and in the village, there are shops, restaurants, and pubs. The beach is popular for sailing and is also used by bathers, although there is no lifeguard present. A sailing club is located in the village, and the beach offers views out over the Firth of Forth. At low tide, some rock pools are exposed, and the beach features a mix of sandy areas and rocks.
Dogs are banned from the beach during the summer months. The beach is located along the 117-mile Fife Coastal Path and is close to Dumbarnie Links Nature Reserve, a scenic and quiet reserve popular with walkers and cyclists. The reserve features lime-rich dunes that provide a habitat for over 2,000 plant and animal species, including a variety of rare plants.
