Fortrose Beach is a mainly sandy beach located on the Black Isle, which is known for its relatively mild climate. The beach stretches for approximately a mile and a half from Fortrose Harbour to Chanonry Point in the east, offering stunning views over the Moray Firth.
Walking is a popular pastime at this sand and shingle beach, and visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the shore or take a more energetic hike to Chanonry Point. The point is home to a scenic lighthouse, now in private ownership, and a popular viewpoint at the end of a spit of land. The beach is also renowned for its dolphin spotting opportunities, with the best times to see them being just after low tide.
Fortrose Harbour, located at the western end of the beach, was once a bustling commercial port but is now a peaceful and picturesque backwater leased by the Chanonry Sailing Club. Visitors can find parking along Wester Greengates and at Chanonry Point, with direct access to the beach. The nearby town centre of Fortrose offers toilets, shops, and places to eat and drink, while the beach is also close to a campsite and an historic 18-hole golf course.
The golf course features a plaque marking the spot where the Brahan Seer, a local prophet, was burnt as a witch in the 17th century. Fort George, a historic fortification, can also be seen from the beach across the mouth of the Moray Firth.
