Portmahomack Beach is a lovely sheltered beach situated on the western edge of the pretty seaside village of Portmahomack. The beach faces west, making it an ideal destination for visitors looking for attractive sunsets. The beach is mainly sandy, backed by sea-grasses and curves gently round the bay.
The beach is popular with watersport enthusiasts, particularly during the warmer months. There are toilets and free parking available for visitors. The beach is also close to a caravan park, providing easy access to the beach.
The Tarbat peninsula, where Portmahomack Beach is located, is an area of outstanding natural beauty and is part of the Moray Firth conservation area. Visitors may be able to spot dolphins and even whales out at sea. The area is also home to the Tarbat Ness Lighthouse, one of the tallest of its kind in the British Isles, located at the tip of the peninsula.
The local area is rich in history and culture, with several interesting historical sites nearby. Portmahomack was an important hub during the time of the Picts, although they were likely driven out by Viking raiders. The Tarbat Discovery Centre is well worth a visit for those interested in learning more about the area's history.
