Herne Bay Central Beach is located to the west of the harbour and Clock Tower, and is a typical English beach town with a shingle beach, wooden beach huts, and fish and chip shops. The bathing water contains numerous groynes and is backed by a promenade, with a pier and harbour breakwater to the east.
The shingle beach at Herne Bay is gently sloping, flattening to a wide expanse of sand and mud that is exposed when the tide retreats. The beach is a popular bathing area for families in the summer holidays, with sheltered bathing behind the breakwater and a range of amenities close at hand. Beach huts can be found at the western end of the beach, towards Hampton pier.
During the holiday season, the bandstand on Central Parade between Herne Bay Pier and Neptunes Arm, offers traditional seaside entertainment, including Brass Bands, tea dances, and children's entertainers such as Punch and Judy.
Herne Bay is an award-winning beach and a popular family seaside destination on the Kent Coast. The beach is dog-friendly, with a small restricted area just to the left of the Pier in the summer.
