Margate Fulsam Rock Beach is located to the east of the harbour and has limited use due to being completely covered by the tide. The beach is known for its extensive underwater rock formations just offshore, which are visible at low tide and give the beach its name. A promenade sits above the beach with public gardens behind. The bathing water is a resort beach close to Margate town centre, featuring a gently shelving sandy beach with a harbour wall at the western end and a lido at the eastern end.
At high tide, there isn’t much of a beach at Fulsam Rock, just the promenade and slipway. However, towards lower tides, a fairly modest patch of sand does appear. The beach has a range of amenities, including restaurants and cafes in the town.
Margate Main Sands is a popular sandy beach and one of Kent’s top seaside destinations. The beach offers a vibrant mix of art, culture, and traditional amusements, making it a great day out for families. During the summertime, there are plenty of activities for children along the beachfront, including a tidal pool, children’s rides, and amusement arcades. The sandy beach is overlooked by the famous Turner Contemporary art gallery, which has free entry and a full schedule of events and exhibitions throughout the year.
The beach is close to a range of attractions, including the charming Old Town with a selection of shops, restaurants, and bars. Visitors can also explore the mysterious ‘Shell Grotto’, discovered in 1835, and Dreamland Margate, a family-friendly amusement park with retro rides and a nostalgic seaside experience.
The main beach is just a couple of minutes from the train station and town centre, making it perfect for day trippers. It takes about an hour and a half to get to Margate from London by train. The beach is popular with families, and the shallow waters are perfect for paddling. RNLI Lifeguards are on duty during the summer, and the beach is dog-friendly in the winter months, restricted from 1st May – 30th September each year.
Margate Fulsam Rock Beach is adjacent to the Kent Coastline Walk and the Viking Coastal Trail.
