Kingsdown Beach is situated within Oldstairs Bay and surrounded by the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The beach is a quiet and secluded spot, located just south of the small town of Kingsdown and just up the coast from the White Cliffs of Dover.
The beach is a shingle beach with some areas of sand exposed at low tide, as well as a chalk shelf. It is backed by grassy scrubland and flanked on one side by chalk cliffs. The area is not particularly developed, making it a good spot for walks and those looking to get away from it all. There are benches suitable for picnics, and at low tide, a number of rockpools are exposed, making it a good place to hunt for sealife. Seals are also occasionally spotted along this stretch of coast.
Swimming is not really recommended due to the sudden slope of the shingle shelves and strong currents in the area. The shingle slopes quite steeply into the sea, and access onto the beach might be difficult for those with mobility problems.
In clear weather, there are views of the French coastline. From Kingsdown beach, it is possible to take the purpose-built cycle track towards Deal, or alternatively to walk in the other direction towards St Margaret’s Bay. The beach is dog friendly all year round.
There are three pubs in the area, one of which is literally right on the seafront, but otherwise few facilities.
Kingsdown Beach is adjacent to the Kent Coastline Walk.
