Folkestone boasts several beaches, each with its unique characteristics. The main beaches in the area include Folkestone Beach, Outer Harbour Beach, and Folkestone Harbour Beach.
Folkestone Beach is a sand and shingle beach located in a bay, backed by cliffs. It is situated within the Dover-Folkestone Heritage Coast and forms part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The beach is next to Folkestone Harbour, with the sand covered at high tide.
Folkestone bathing water is a resort beach in Kent, located at the northern edge of Hythe Bay. The beach consists of fine sand mixed with occasional gravel and is approximately 200 metres wide. It is enclosed in a small bay with chalk cliffs in the east and a breakwater in the west, adjacent to a small harbour.
Outer Harbour Beach is a sandy beach nestled up to the south pier of Folkestone harbour. Although the beach itself is pleasantly sandy, the backdrop is somewhat industrial, making it less favoured by visitors. The beach becomes mostly covered at high tide.
Folkestone Harbour Beach is a sandy stretch of beach next to the town's historic harbour and the lively Harbour Arm. It offers a relaxed spot to enjoy the seaside with the convenience of being close to cafés, shops, and the creative quarter. The beach is sandy with some shingle, especially higher up near the sea wall. When the tide is out, a broader area of sand is revealed, making it perfect for paddling, sandcastle building, or simply enjoying the sea breeze.
Folkestone Harbour Beach has easy access, with sloped walkways leading down to the sand. Parking is available at the Harbour Arm car park and other pay-and-display sites nearby. The beach is also a short walk from Folkestone town centre and the Creative Quarter, making it easily accessible on foot or by public transport. Toilets are available near the harbour and along the promenade, and there are various food stalls and restaurants nearby.
Dogs are not allowed on Folkestone Harbour Beach between 1 May and 30 September. Visitors with dogs may prefer to visit nearby dog-friendly beaches such as Sunny Sands or The Warren.
Folkestone Beach is adjacent to the Kent Coastline Walk.
