Tynemouth Short Sands is a 300m stretch of golden sand, backed by steep grass banks and cliffs, giving it a rural feel in an urban location. The beach is popular with people who want to bathe, surf, play beach games, or simply relax. A beach cafe is also available, offering a convenient spot for refreshments.
The beach is situated at the foot of Tynemouth Priory and Castle, a historic site run by English Heritage. Tynemouth is easy to reach via the local Metro transit system or by bus. There is some free parking available, although access to the beach involves a lot of steps, making it less than ideal for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
The beach offers a range of activities, including surfing, diving, snorkelling, sunbathing, and swimming. RNLI beach lifeguards are in place throughout the summer, and dogs are banned between 1 May and 20 September. The beach has won both Blue Flag and Seaside awards, and there are plenty of cafes and shops nearby.
Dogs are allowed on the beach outside of the restricted period, and visitors are advised to check the local rules and regulations before visiting. The beach can get busy in summer, although it is generally quieter than nearby Whitley Bay.
