Tynemouth Long Sands South Beach boasts a half-mile stretch of fine golden sand backed by dunes, providing a picturesque setting for a variety of activities. The beach's rural charm is a notable contrast to its urban surroundings, making it a popular spot for those seeking to bathe, surf, kayak, canoe, play beach sports, or simply relax.
The beach is complemented by a range of amenities, including an adjacent park, the Blue Reef aquarium, a toy museum, and shops. Access to the beach is available at both ends via an access road and steps from the seafront. Visitors can also reach the beach on foot, with Cullercoats metro station to the north and Tynemouth metro station to the south being just a ten-minute walk away.
Long Sands offers a range of activities, including surfing, swimming, and beach sports, making it an attractive alternative to more traditional surf destinations in Cornwall and Devon. The beach's popularity has also led to it hosting the British National Surfing Championship, attracting professional surfers and fans to the area.
The beach is dog-friendly, although there are restrictions in place from May 1 to September 30. During this period, designated areas towards the northern end of Tynemouth Longsands, near Cullercoats, are available for dog owners.
