Ogmore Slip Beach is situated just south of the Ogmore Estuary and Kenfig National Nature Reserve. The beach is exposed at low tide and features the mouth of the River Ogmore, which runs into the sea to the north of the town of Ogmore-by-Sea. The beach has a reputation for being one of the cleanest in the region and is a popular spot for various activities, including swimming, surfing, fishing, and walking.
The beach looks out towards Tusker Rock, a rock formation named after a Danish Viking who colonised the local area. At low tide, Tusker Rock is completely visible and has become a popular spot for diving. The beach is flanked by the River Ogmore estuary and the rolling dunes of Merthyr Mawr, making it a nature lover's paradise.
A large parking area can be reached from the B4524, with toilets available. The beach can be accessed via a long ramp that descends the side of the rocky cliffs. A coastal walk passes the car park, offering stunning views of the sea from above the cliff-tops. Additional facilities, such as shops, places to eat, and accommodation, can be found in the nearby village of Ogmore-by-Sea.
Visitors are advised to stick to designated swimming areas and avoid swimming in the River Ogmore due to safety concerns. The beach is well-suited for watersports, including surfing and kayaking, and has lifeguards on duty daily from July to September. However, the area has a history of shipwrecks due to its west-facing beach and strong onshore winds.
The area is known for its stunning geology and diverse wildlife, making it a popular spot for nature enthusiasts. Ogmore Castle, located nearby, offers a glimpse into Wales' medieval past and features ancient ruins overlooking the shoreline.
Ogmore Slip Beach is dog-friendly, allowing pets all year round without restrictions. Visitors are advised to check tide times and wear sturdy shoes for rocky areas. Local pubs can be found half a mile up the river by Ogmore Castle.
However, it is worth noting that one source reports that the beach suffers badly from litter and refuse, despite being popular with families, surfers, and canoeists.
Ogmore Slip Beach is on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.
