Jersey Marine East Beach is an extensive sandy beach, particularly at low tide, backed by a dunes system that forms part of the Crymlyn Burrows nature reserve. The beach's setting is somewhat industrial, with the nearby Port Talbot and Swansea Docks, but it offers a unique and diverse environment.
The beach is situated at the mouth of the River Neath, between the industrial area of Port Talbot and the busy Swansea Docks. The Crymlyn Burrows, which back the beach, are a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and host a remarkable biodiversity of plant and animal species.
The extensive dune system at Jersey Marine East Beach supports over 270 plant species, making it one of Wales' most botanically diverse coastal sites. Botanical enthusiasts can spot rare dune specialists, including sea stock, Portland spurge, and various orchid species during the summer months. The area also attracts numerous bird species, such as ringed plovers, oystercatchers, and sandwich terns.
Jersey Marine East Beach offers excellent walking opportunities, with the Wales Coast Path running through the area and connecting to longer walking routes. Visitors can follow the beach northward to explore the Neath estuary or southward toward Swansea Bay.
Unlike more commercialised beaches, Jersey Marine East Beach remains undeveloped, with no cafes, toilet facilities, or commercial amenities directly on the beach. Visitors must come prepared with refreshments and other necessities. Swimmers should exercise extreme caution, be aware of tide times, and never swim alone, as the beach lacks lifeguard services and can experience strong currents.
The beach transforms dramatically through the seasons, with spring bringing an explosion of wildflowers, summer offering warmer swimming conditions, autumn displaying dramatic skies and migrating birds, and winter revealing the beach at its most wild and atmospheric.
The beach offers spectacular sunset views across Swansea Bay toward the Mumbles headland, making it a photographer's paradise, particularly during the golden hour.
