The beach is steeply sloping and pebbly, leading to a large area of flat sand closer to the sea. There are steep cliffs to the north of the beach, leading up to St Bees Head. The beach stretches from South Head to Seamill Lane, consisting of a shingle bank which slopes down to an expanse of golden sand. The sand is exposed at most states of tide, except for a couple of hours either side of high tide.
A wide promenade and garden, RSPB reserve, and children's play park are nearby, offering a range of activities for visitors. The RSPB nature reserve on Saint Bees Head is home to a variety of seabirds, including guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars, and razorbills. Peregrines and ravens can also be spotted above the red sandstone cliffs.
The beach is ideal for families, with plenty of space to make sandcastles, explore the rock pools, and paddle in the sea during the summer months. The beach is also popular with walkers and nature lovers, who can stroll down the wide promenade or begin the Wainwright ‘coast to coast’ walk. Visitors can also play a round of golf at the St Bees Golf course, which offers stunning sea views. The beach is dog-friendly all year round, making it one of the best beaches for dogs in Cumbria.
St Bees Beach is adjacent to the Cumbria Coastal Way.
