St Annes South Beach is a sandy beach with a Victorian pier that stretches into the Irish Sea. The beach is backed by 'Pleasure Island', a large grassy area featuring attractive gardens, a boating lake, and Lytham's iconic green windmill. The pier, which dates back to 1885, measures around 600 ft (180 m) in length and was originally intended to attract a more affluent visitor than Blackpool's working-class day-trippers.
The beach itself is a huge expanse of golden sand, perfect for running around on and building sandcastles. At low tide, up to one kilometre of sand is exposed, making it an ideal spot for a paddle. However, there are no lifeguards on duty, and swimming is not recommended towards the Ribble Estuary. The tides can come in quickly, so it's essential to check the tide times before heading out for a swim or a walk along the shore.
As you head southwards, the beach becomes a haven for wildlife, with sand dunes attracting huge numbers of wildfowl and waders. The nearby Fairhaven Lake is home to an RSPB Discovery Centre, providing plenty of information about the local wildlife.
The beach offers a range of facilities and activities, including amusement arcades, a kids' paddling pool, and colourful beach huts. Visitors can also enjoy watersports like paddleboarding and kayaking, or take a leisurely stroll along the promenade lined with gardens and charming features. There are plenty of cafes and ice cream stands around, making it easy to grab a treat while enjoying the stunning views of the beach.
St Annes Beach is partially dog-friendly, but there are some restrictions to keep in mind. From Good Friday until September 30 each year, dogs are not allowed on the main bathing beach, which is the area located between the lifeboat station and the northern end of the North Promenade car park. However, outside of this designated zone, dogs can freely roam along the expansive stretches of beach towards Squires Gate and Lytham Quays.
The pier at St Annes dates back to 1885 and features lovely Victorian architecture. Although a considerable section has been destroyed, the now separate landing jetty remains to give an idea of the pier's original length.
