Formby Beach at Lifeboat Road is a stunning rural, flat, clean, sandy beach that falls within the Sefton Coast Site of Special Scientific Interest. The beach is backed by sand dunes and has views across Liverpool Bay to the Wirral and North Wales. It is a popular destination for those looking to enjoy the outdoors, with plenty of space for playing beach games, building sandcastles, and sunbathing.
The beach has a shallow profile that increasingly drops off towards the sea, and there are multiple access points to the beach via boardwalks across the dunes. Visitors can enjoy a lifeguard service covering part of Formby beach during the summer, as well as notices warning of potential hazards such as the speed of the incoming tide. The beach is surrounded by extensive grassy dunes and wooded areas, with plenty of footpaths for walkers to explore.
The area is home to a variety of British wildlife, including the rare Natterjack toad and sand lizards. The beach and surrounding woods are also a haven for birdlife, with plenty of opportunities for spotting different species. The natural beauty of the area is further enhanced by the presence of ancient coastal pinewoods and the famous neolithic footprints and stone age past that reveal themselves in the sand.
The town of Formby itself lies around 2 miles east of the beach, and the nearest railway station to the Lifeboat Road part of the beach is Formby, about one mile away. Plenty of pay-for parking is available, although it is a 15-minute walk from the car park to the beach, through the dunes. Access to the beach itself may be difficult for those with mobility problems, although the boardwalk at the car park is wheelchair friendly.
The beach is dog-friendly, with a designated dog exercise zone, and well-behaved dogs are also allowed to join you as you wander across the beach and through the woods. Visitors can enjoy a range of recreational activities, including swimming (recommended at high tide when lifeguards are on duty), fishing, and walking.
