Formby Victoria Road Beach is a wide, flat sandy beach backed by a large area of protected dunes and woodland, much of which is a National Trust Reserve. The beach is favoured by fishermen and dog walkers, with a designated dog exercise zone. The National Trust reserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including endangered red squirrels, Natterjack toads, and sand lizards.
The beach offers miles of unspoilt coastline with an abundance of bird and plant life. Visitors can relax and unwind on the beach, explore the dunes and pine woodland, and appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Swimming is recommended at high tide when lifeguards are on duty. The beach is dog-friendly, and well-behaved dogs are allowed to join their owners on the beach and in the woods.
The dunes are a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and are home to some rare species of flora and fauna. The area has a rich history, with pre-historic human and animal footprints preserved in clay, visible as the tide recedes. These footprints are thought to be between 5,000 and 7,000 years old. However, the area suffers from significant coastal erosion.
Please note that Formby beach car park and toilets at Victoria Road are closed until spring 2026 for a major conservation project. Visitors are advised not to travel to National Trust Formby by car on sunny days and to consider alternative modes of transport, such as the train to Formby station. National Trust members can park for free at the Victoria Road end of the beach.
Visitors need to observe warning notices and safety flags on the beach. Dogs need to be kept under control at all times, and owners must clean up after their dogs.
Formby Victoria Road Beach is adjacent to the Sefton Coastal Footpath.
